Needham was born on November 28th, 1778 in Ashboro, Randolph, NC. Needham's father was John Bayley Lawrence and his mother was Nancy Ann Needham. His paternal grandfather was William Edward Lawrence and his paternal grandmother is Jane Tullos; his maternal grandparents were John Needham and Elizabeth Brothers. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Edward, John, Richard, Peter, Jonathan, Jesse, Sarah, Martha Patty and Nancy Ann. He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
