"Henry Isham, Sr., came to Virginia about 1656, where he had a grant of land. As the records of Henrico Co., where he lived at Bermuda Hundred, previous to 1677 have been destroyed, no copy of his will remains; but the records show that he died after 1675. He married Katherine, widow of Joseph Royall, of Henrico co., (stated in the Isham pedigree to be a daughter of Banks, of Canterbury, England) and had issue (1) Henry died 1679, unmarried. (2) Mary, married William Randolph, of "Turkey Island," Henrico Co., and (3) Anne, married Frances Epps, of Henryco Co. In his will dated 13, January 1678 Henry Isham, Jr. names mother, sisters and step brother." Does this mean that Katherine may have had a child or children from her previous marriage to Joseph Royall? Is it possible that Phoebe Isham could have been born Phoebe Royall and formally or informally assumed the Isham name when her mother married Capt. Henry Isham?
