Henry I (Beauclerc) 1100-1135; Born atSelby, Yorkshire, 1070; Crowned at Westminster Abbey 6 Aug 1100; buriedat Reading...King William II's younger brother, Henry was scholarly andwell educated. His marriage to Matilda of Scotland, g-g-dau of KingEdmund Ironside, did much to win back the English sympathy, which hadbeen alienated by his brother, William II, (called Rufus, supposedlybecause of his ruddy complexion). King Henry did much to correct theabuse his brother William imposed on the coffers of England. He also didmuch for the judicial and fiscal system of his kingdom, & curbed thegrowing power & ambitions of the barons. His only son, William, wasdrowned in the wreck of the White Ship. With the succession in doubt, hepersuaded his nobles, headed by his nephew, Stephen, to swear support tothe succession of his daughter, Matilda. However, upon Henry's death,Stephen immediately claimed the throne himself. Eventually, in 1153, bythe treaty of Wallingford, Matilda's son, Henry, was acknowledged as heirapparent to the throne, Stephen's issue being excluded. 11 MAR 1998
