His paternal grandparents were John (Nicholas) HATHAWAY and Martha SHEPHARD; his maternal grandparents were Shadrach WILBUR (WILBORE) and Mary DEAN (DEANE) (DANE). He had nine brothers and a sister, named Abraham, Thomas, Shadrack, Samuel, John, John B, Benjamin, Eleazer, Jacob and Rebecca.
