Herman was born on December 6th, 1856 in Dossenback, Baden, Germany. Herman's father is Johannes GRETHER and his mother was Anna Katharina STRUEBIN. His paternal grandparents were Johann GRETHER and Magdalena EGLIN; his maternal grandparents were Johannes STRUEBIN and Magdalena SCHOENAUER. He had a brother and three sisters, named Rudolf, Sophie Wilhelmine, Lina and Maria Magdalena. He was the oldest of the five children.
