His paternal grandparents were Alexander SETON and Elizabeth Gordon; his maternal grandfather was William Crichton. He had three brothers and five sisters, named George, William, Adam, Christian, Elizabeth, Catherine (Janet), Janet and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
