His paternal grandfather was Alexander ELPHINSTONE and his paternal grandmother is Katherine ERSKINE; his maternal grandparents are John DRUMMOND and Margaret Jane STEWART. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, James, John (Secundus), William, George, Janet, Agnes, Elizabeth, Margaret and Jean (Elphinstone). He was the oldest of the eleven children.
