His paternal grandparents were Johnathan Upham COX and Lucinda BLOOD; his maternal grandparents were Robert F. MILLS and Rhoda HULET. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Robert Frederick, Almer Bingley, Orville Mills, Delaun Mills, Philemon, Sylvanus Hulet, Amasa Bernard, Adelia Belinda, Tryphena Marie and Elvira Euphrasia.
