Matthew I was born in 1137 in Flanders, Belgium.  Matthew I's father was Thierry II (Dietrich Ii) Count Of Flanders and his mother was Sybila Mabirie D'anjou.  His paternal grandparents were Thierry I (Dietrich) Duke Of Lorraine and Gertrude Heiress Of Flanders; his maternal grandparents were Fulk D'anjou and Aremburga UNKNOWN. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Philipp, Baldwin, Marguerite I and Gertrude.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 36 on July 25th, 1173 in In Battle.

‌Matthew I and Mary were married in a religious ceremony in 1160.  They had three daughters named Judith, Ida and Matilda (Maud).
