His paternal grandparents were Thomas Matthew Rogers and Eleanor McMurdock; his maternal grandparents were Rev. Richard Ravens and Elizabeth Hedge. He had three brothers and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Joseph, John, James, Elizabeth and Thomas. He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Capt.
