Stephen 9 MIDDAGH (Jacob 8 ) was born before 29 Oct 1748 i n Marbletown, Ulster, NY, and was christened 29 Oct 1748 in Ulster, NY. Witnesses: Johannes B ogard and Catharine Janse. Stephen died 28 Aug 1800 in NELSON, Ontario, Canada.
In papers included in the file of an "Order-in-Council" dated 8/7/1810, Elizabeth Middaugh states she is "the widow of Stephen Middaugh". A petition signed by James DePEW on 3/3/1819 included in the probate records settling Stephen's estate s tates that Stephen died 28 August 1800.  This date is questionable; it is believed he died some years later.
There is very little data pertaining to Stephen in colonial records other than a record of his baptism and the George Clinton Papers in the State of New York Archives pert aining to the "Marbletown Disaffection" (see below). The only informatio n that pertains to his life as an adult, other than a reference in a book "Colchester; Profile and Places Remembered" indicating he and his brother, John, were among the early settlers on the East Branch of the Delaware River and that they were "Tories", is in Canadian and British archives or books based on data extracted from these archives. Stephen was an active supporter of the British cause during the Revolutionary War. He participated in the ill-fated Marbletown Disaffection where he, his brother, Jacob, and his cousin, Abraham attempted to go to New York with a group of about 50 others to join the British Army. After a minor skirmish with the colonial army in which five of the group and one of the colonials
were killed and another of the colonials wounded; about thirty of the group were captured. They were taken to Fort Montgomery where on April 30th and May 2nd to May 5th, 1777 they were tried by a courts martial, convicted and, with a very few excep ions, sentenced to hang for treason. The convictions were subsequently upheld by the New York State Convention which was meeting in Kingston to form the State of New York and the hangings were or dered to take place at a time and place of Governor George Clinton's choosing. Two days after confirming the execution orders the Convention reconsidered their action and pardoned all of those convicted and sentenced to hang
except Stephen's, brother, Jacob, and one other member of the group, Jacob ROOSA. The two Jacobs were considered to be the "ringleaders" of the movement and were hung on 5/13/1777 at Kingston, NY. Although pardons for the others in the group were authorized by the Convention, some of the dissidents were held in jail for several months not knowing they had been pardoned.  Stephen is believed to have been among those detained for a period of time.
Following Stephen’s release from prison he joined his brother, Jan and Henry Bush, husband of his sister, Neeltjen, and the three of them, together with their families, fled to Canada. There are a number of references in Canadian and British records pertai ning to Stephen and his family covering the period from shortly before his involvement in the Marbletown Disaffection until his death inCanada. These references, found in the Canadian and British Archives and in books based on data in other records, are discussed in detail in Appendix "B" The Unknowns of Stephen Middagh of this compilation. Unfortunately, the data does not indicate when , where or how many times he married. Nor, does the data indicate where, when and in what order his children were born. As a consequence the compiler has made some arbitrary choices. One of the choices made is to list the children of Stephen in this compilation in the order given in William D . Reid's book "The Loyalists In Ontario".
It is believed Stephen had two wives. The name of the first  wife is unknown and no record of the marriage has been found. There also is some doubt as to the identity of his second wife.  There is a record of a marriage between a Stephen MIDAUK an  an Elizabeth PEACOCK (or
BEACOCK) in the records of the Anglican Parish of Montreal . In all probability this is the record of Stephen's second marriage. There is sworn testimony that he resided in Montreal until at least the Summer of 1784. There are other records substantiating that he was in the Montreal area at the time.  Confusing the issue as to the name of his second wife are records in the Canadian National Archives;
an "Order-in-Council" dated 2 February, 1825 where Elizabeth BABCOCK, d/o David BABCOCK and widow of Stephen MIDDAGH of Pickering, was granted 200 acres of "Crown Waste Lands".  It appears that Elizabeth PEACOCK/BEACOCK and Elizabeth BABCOCK are one and the same person although there is conflicting data that raises questions about the propriety of making such an assumption.
Even though there are these still some unresolved conflicts , the compiler believes the lineage shown is the most probable. However no
attempt has been made to determine which of Stephen's wives was the mother of each of his children.  Instead all ten of his children are listed as children of his first wife (even though this is known to be incorrect ) and leave the resolution of this problem (i.e.,determination as to which of Stephen's wives is the mother of which child) to future research. It also was decided to list his second wife as Elizabeth BABC OCK, since that is the surname used in the "OC" dated 2/2/1825 (see above) and include in the notes pert aining to her;  the record of the
MIDAUK - PEACOCK/ BEACOCK marriage in 1784 in the Anglican Church in Montreal.
The Canadian records indicate Stephen resided in Flamboroug h East, Nelson and Pickering, Ontario in the period from 1780-1810.
He married (1) ________ Unknown about 1769 in Ulster, NY. The date of the marriage is based on the reported ages of the children listed in Stephen's family in the Canadian victualing lists and other records. Both the date and place of the marriage are estimates based on other known facts.
She appears to have died prior to February 1784 as it is be lieved he married Elizabeth PEACOCK (BABCOCK) in Montreal, Canada, on that date. (See Appendi x "B".)
Nothing is known of this spouse of Stephens' other than, based on Canadian records, Stephen apparently had at least two and probably three children by someone prior to his recorded marriage (to Elizabeth BABCOCK) in February of 1784.
