Note: Of Warwicke and Kingstown, RI. William Knowles, born in 1645,was a resident of Warwick, and of South Kingstown, where he wasactive in official life for several decades, serving as deputyto the General Assembly in 1706 and 1707. His sons, with theexception of John, who removed to Richmond, were residents ofSouth Kingstown. Through John Knowles descended the Knowles ofRichmond and Hopkinton. On 22 Oct 1661, with the consent of his father, William wasapprenticed to Thomas Smith, a tailor of Pawtuxet. On Sep 251671, being then of Kingstown, he was one of a committee of fiveto make an assemssment on the inhabitants of Pettacomscott. OnJuly 29 1679 William and forty-one other inhabitants ofNarragansett signed a petition to the King, praying that he"would put an end to these differences about the governmentthereof which hath been so fatal to the prosperity of the place;animosities still arising in people's minds as they standaffected to this or that government", and promising help againstthe indians. On 6 Mar 1688 he was a grand juryman at theRochester court. On 30 Oct 1690 he was chosen one of four mento make the tax rate for Kingstown. On 6 Jun 1700 he became aproprietor of lands in East Greenwich, recieving Lot No. 15.He also had lands in West Greenwich. In 1701 he gave 12s.towards building the Friends meeting house at Mashapaug. On 12Jul 1703 he was chosen one of twelve to lay out highways androads in Kingstown. He was twice chosen as deputy of Kingstown,on 25 Feb 1707 and 29 Oct 1707. He also had lands in WestGreenwich in 1709. In his will, dated 6 Oct 1721 and proved21 Apr 1727, He appointed his son Robert Executor and hisfriends George and Stephan Hazard overseers. To his son Henryhe gave part of the homestead and half of the land on the plain.To his son William, who had had his portion, 5s. To his sonDaniel 5s. To his son Robert the rest of the homestead, withall the housing, and 149 acres in East Greenwich and 5s. To hiswife Alice all the movable estate belonging to the dwellinghouse, as household stuff, etc., half of the cattle, sheephoreskind, and swine, at her disposal, and one-half use of thehome lands given to their son Robert, while she is a widow. Tohis wife also the great room and bedroom in the house, and halfthe orchard where William liveth. To his daughters Rose Wilson,Martha Sherman, and Mary Chase 5 pounds each, to be paid by hisson William. To his daughter Margaret Knowles 40 pounds, a fireroom, firewood, etc. while unmarried, and a riding horse. Tohis daughter Alice Screven 5 pounds. The inventory included afeather bed, stillyards, pewter, a worstead comb, a cheesepress, a riding mare, a yearling horse, nine cows, five heifers,two yearlings, a steer, a yoke of oxen, a shoat, etc. (seeAustin's "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, pg 334.")
