John was born about 1510 in Melford, Suffolk, Eng.1 John's father was John Hammond and his mother was Johanna. His paternal grandparents were William Hammond and Alice. He was known as John Hammond the Clothier of Lavenham. He appears to be the first of that name in Lavenham, and probably settled there as Lavenham was then a center of the colth industry. Many of the early families of Watertown, MA from there and the surrounding country, as were many of them connected to the Hammond's by marriage.
His will was written 22 Dec 1550 and proved 5 Jun 1551 at Lambeth, Greater London, England. It named his wife Agnes, sons William and Thomas and daughters Elizabeth, Margaret and Johane. He left the house in Melford he inherited from his father to his son Thomas. His wife and son William were named excutors of the will.
