GERSHOM (HEALD) HALE (JOHN1 HEALD I) was born January 23, 1646/47 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA, and died 1717 in Stow, MA. He married ANN VINTON May 6, 1673 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA, daughter of JOHN VINTON and ANN. She was born April 4, 1656 in Lynn, MA, and died September 4, 1698 in Springfield, MA
Notes for GERSHOM (HEALD) HALE:
It is uncertain when Gershom and Ann Hale left Concord, but was likely soon after the birth of Gershom, Jr., in 1684. Their daughter Ruth was born in Stow, December 19, 1687, where Gershom and brothers, Isreal and Isaac were taxed in 1688. A deed of transfer of land at Stow bears his signature as "Held". His brother, Deacon Thomas Hale of Hadley and Enfield, signed a deed in 1678 as "Haile", writing it frequently as "Heal" and "Hele".
In 1698 a son was born to Gershom and Ann Hale at Springfield. Ann died.
At a meeting of the town of Springfield, 3/11/1700/01, he moved to the town to grant him 29 acres of land on the South side of Agawam, upon the feeding hill below Isaac Frost's land.
this was confirmed to him 3/10/1710, 3 years after land was granted to him and his sone, Gershom, at West Springfield/ In the latter record their names are spelled "Hail", so it seems a member of this family may have a wide choice.
A document bearing the day the West Springfield grant was made, 8/7/1707, of every male person there is in the twenty first year of his age, contains the names of the two Gershoms and a John Hail. In a division of land same day, the name is recorded "Haill".
A document bearing date of 4/19/1720, recording a meeting of the inhabitants, again includes Gershom, Sr and Gershom, Jr and John. Of the same day is a list of people who had more recently moved to West Springfield, which contains the name of Benjamin Hale. Another division of land in West Springfield, 1720, contains the name of Gershom Hale, Sr. An historian, speaking of the marriage of Ruth Haile to Nathaniel Bancroft, in 1708, says she was the daughter of "Gershom Haile, who on 11/2/1728, sold to Nathaniel Bancroft, of Springfield, 4 acres of land west of the Conn River and south of the Agawam River. Mention is made of these transfers, because of the fact that some writers state that Gershom Hale died in Springfield in 1717. Since the record of 1720 land division speaks of both Sr and Jr, it must have referred to this father and son, because the son himself, born 1684, was at that time but 36 , hardly old enough to have had a son sharing in the division of land in 1720. Gershom Sr was about 73 at the time. Taken from pg 294/295 from "ANCESTRY AND POSTERITY OF JOSEPH SMITH AND EMMA HALE"
