Sir William of Penrhyn was born in 1445 in of Penrhyn, Caernarvonshire, Wales.1 Sir William of Penrhyn's father was Gwilym Fychan Of Penrhyn Ap Gruffydd and his mother was Alice Dalton. His paternal grandparents were Gwilym Ap Gruffydd Of Penrhyn and Joan Stanley; his maternal grandfather was Sir Richard Dalton. He had a sister named Agnes. The Griffiths of Penrhyn were one of the most powerful families in North Wales at the time and were a branch of the Tudor family descended from Ednyfed Fychan (d. 1246) and the Welsh royal and princely house.
Sir William of Penrhyn and Joan were married in a religious ceremony before 1480.1 They had two sons and a daughter, named William, Sir William II of Penrhyn and Alice.
