John was Knight of the Shire for Lancaster 1383-1388 and 1390. He is said to have distinguished himself at the siege of Noyon in 1370. He attended John of Gaunt or Ghent, son of Edward III, as one of his retinue in Spain in 1386, and was commissioned by Henry IV to bring forces against the Percies, who had risen in rebellion in 1403. He was drowned in a well at Norham, leaving with other issue a son and heir John.
