Rhys "Gryg" was born about 1150 in of Carmarthenshire, Wales.1   Rhys "Gryg"'s father was Rhys Ap Gruffudd and his mother was Gwladys ferch Griffith.  His paternal grandparents were Gruffud Ap Rhys and Gwenllian II Verch Gruffydd; his maternal grandfather was Lord of Cymcydmaen Griffith. He had a brother and a sister, named Rhys "Golff" and Angharat Of. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Gruffydd ap Rhys, Prince of Deheubarth Gryg, Prince Of Deheubarth, Agnes and Gwenllian.  He died in 1234 in Llandeilo-Fawr, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  He was buried in 1234 in St. David's, Pebidiog, Pembrokeshire, wales.1 1
