John of Strathbogie, 9th Earl of Atholl; one of the Scottish magnates whorecognised Margaret, The Maid of Norway, as heir to the Scottish Crown 5Feb 1283/4; swore fealty to Edward I of England 1292; nevertheless foughtin the Scottish army against the English at defeat by latter of Scots atDunbar 28 April 1296 and was held prisoner in the Tower of London 1296-31July 1297; married as her 1st husband Margaret, daughter of 6th Earl ofMar, and having been captured again by the English after the Battle ofMethven 19 June 1306 was beheaded in London 7 Nov 1306 and stripped ofhis title and lands (including Chilham). JOHN (OF STRATHBOGIE), EARL OF ATHOLL [Scotland], son and heir by 2ndwife. He was one of the Nobles who, 5 Fcbrmacry 1283/4, acknowledgedMargaret, Maid of Norway, as their Sovereign. In 1292 he swore fealty toEdward I, but fought on the side of the Scots in their defeat at Dunbar,28 April 1296, and was take prisoner to London, the order for his releasefrom the Tower being dated 31 July 1297. Having married Margaret,daughter of Donald, EARL OF MAR, by Helen, daughter of Llewellyn, PRINCEOF NORTH WALES, and sister to the 1st wife of King, Robert Bruce, hebecame a staunch adherent of Bruce, at whose coronation he assisted, 27March 1306. In the English invasion of Scotland that followed, the Earlwas taken prisoner to London, executed 7 November 1306 (his body burntand his head fixed on London Bridge), and his title forfeited.
