25. MREDYDD GOCH (son of No. 24). The English equivalent of Goch is Red."The ruin of the house of Bleddyn so far as any claim to sovereignty wasnow complete." (Rhys.) This refers to the period about 1130. The Kingdomof Powys was in the possession of the Lords Marchers. The descendants ofthe Welsh chieftains held comparatively small estates. The followingextract from The Welsh People furnishes the only glimpse we have of thelife of Mredydd Goch and his descendants for many generations. "Thoughreduced in power, they kept up, according to their means, the householdstate found in Howel's laws, haughtily cherished the memories of adeparted greatness, and alternately, sullenly acquiesced in the new stateof things and eagerly seized an opportunity for revenge against Norman,Saxon and Cymric neighbor alike." Let us hope that our ancestor MredyddGoch took a more cheerful view of the situation.
