Maredudd was born about 0938 in Deheubarth, Wales.1 Maredudd's father was Owain ap Hywell and his mother was Angharad Verch Llewelyn. His paternal grandparents were Hywell Dha ap Cadell and Elen Verch Llywarch. He had a brother named Einon. He was the younger of the two children. He died in 0999.2 General Notes

20. MAREDUDD (son of No. 19). He became King of Deheubarth in 986 anddirectly proceeded to conquer Gwynedd. In 990 he raided and plunderedMaes Hyfaidd (Radnorshire) which was then in the possession of theMercians. In the same year the Saxons devastated his territory and in 993it was wasted by the plague. Both the Danes and the Saxons caused himmuch trouble during his entire reign. His nephews also tried to regainGwynedd, but he was successful over all his enemies. It is said that heobtained Powys through his mother which made him King of all Wales. Inthe Bruts he is acclaimed as the "most famous King of the Britons."(Lloyd). He died in 998 or 999 leaving an only daughter and sole heiress,Angharad. She married Llewelyn ap Seisyll, who assumed the reins ofgovernment. They had one son, Gruffydd.
