William Swift 
William was born on April 15th, 1589 in Darrington, Yorkshire, England.1 William's father was William Swift and his mother was Janet Elizabeth Wilson. His paternal grandparents were William Swift and Elizabeth Mason; his maternal grandfather was Robert Wilson. He was an only child. He died in Sandwich, Barnstable co., MA.2 General Notes

WILLIAM SWIFT came from England about 1630; a proprietor of Watertown,Mass., 1636; Removed to Sandwich about 1639. Lawsuit at Salem in 1638;served in Lt. John Blackner's company, 1643. His son Edward wasapprenticed to George Andrews, Butcher, in Eastclepe, London. He sold ahouse and land at Sud. 28-4-1641{Suff. De. and Col. Rec. vol.1} He diedat Sandwich, Inventory taken 29 Jan 1642. Wife Joanne, Administer, andDaniel Wing gave bonds with her; a house at Sudbury was mortaged to Mr.Burton. The widow's will was Probated 8-12-1662. Bequest to Daniel Wing'stwo sons, Samuel and John; Grandchildren Hannah Swift and ExperienceAllen; to Mary Darby; To Hannah Wing the Elder, and her
Duughters; to Zebadiah Allin; son William Exec.[POM].

William Swyft came from England to America probably in the Great Bostonimmigration of 1630-31. Savage says he probably came from Bocking, CountyEssex, or vicinity, but all Bocking Parish records were burned about thetime of the Restoration. He may have descended from Robert Swyft and hiswife Ann, whose tomb is in Rotherham Parish Church in Rotherham. Ann diedin 1539 and Robert in 1561. William was a proprietor in Watertown, Mass.in 1634 and had been there for several years. He drew various proprietorslots in Watertown but sold his property in 1637 and moved to Sandwich,where he bought the largest farm in town. In 1642 he served in LieutenantJohn Blackmer's Company. He died before January, 1643 as his inventorywas shown at Court there and amounted to 72 pounds 11 shillings. On March7, 1643 "Letters of Administration are graunted to Joane Swyft ofSandwich to administer upon her husbandes estate and
to pay the debts as far as the estate will amount unto, by equalproporcons, and is bound to the Gov. and Assistantes to do it, & Daniell
Wing with her." Joan survived her husband 20 years and died in Sandwich,November 26, 1663. Her will is in the Plymouth Colony Records, andInventory amounted to 105 pounds 6 shillings.
