Eleanor was born about 1447 in Clifton, Runcorn, Cheshire, England. Eleanor's father was John IV Savage and her mother was Katherine Stanley. Her paternal grandparents were John III Savage and Eleanor De Brereton; her maternal grandparents were Thomas 1St Baron Stanley and Joan Goushill.
