William was born about 1495 in Castledon,Pertshire,Scotland. William's father was William Murray and his mother was Margaret Stewart. His paternal grandparents were William Murray and Mary Keith; his maternal grandparents were Sir John Stewart Of , 1st Earl Of Atholl Balvney and Lady Eleanor Sinclair. He was an only child.
