John was born about 1475 in Portledge, Devonshire, England.  John's father was Richard Coffin and his mother was Alice Gambon.  His paternal grandparents were William Coffin and Margaret Giffard. He had two brothers and a sister, named Sir William, Richard and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the four children.


John's family with Phillippa Hingston

‌John and Phillippa were married in a religious ceremony about 1503.  They had three sons and two daughters, named James, Richard, Thomas, Alice Margaret and Jaquet Ann.
