Nymphas Stacy was born about 1699, it is believed in Ipswich, MA. He was a cordwainer (shoem aker) and for many years was a Deacon of the First Church in Gloucester, MA.
The odd name "Nymphas" was a family name of the Simon Stacy branch from Bocking, England . It had existed in England in the earlier generations and it persisted in American for several generations. It comes from a chance referance in Collosians of the Apostle Paul, Collosi ans, Chapter IV, verse 15.
The first mention of Nymphas is in Gloucester where he probably came with his parents, J ohn and Mary Clerke Stacy, in 1723. There he became a shoemaker and worked at this trade th e remainder of his life which was spent in Gloucester, MA. The next year on November 19, 172 4, he married Hannah Littlehale of Gloucester, MA. They were married by the Rev. John White.
Nymphas Stacy became active in the affairs of the town of Gloucester, MA, as indicated i n the Glocester Town Records.
Nymphas Stacy, father of Col. William Stacy, owned two schooners. This record was copied at the Essex Institute in Salem, MA. The names of the schooners; "Hannah" and "Elizabeth" .
Nymphas Stacy could be considered a wealthy business man. He apparently named the schooners after his two wives. No account of these two vessels are to be found in the inventory of the estate of Nymphas Stacy, so he may hzve sold them bedore he died.
Nymphas Stacy's gravestone was still standing in the old cemetery at Gloucester in 1915, with the following inscription:
"In memory of Deacon Nymphas Stacy who
died Nov.14, 1774, aged 75 years."
