His paternal grandparents were William Mansel Sir Barone and Mary Philipps. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John Clavell |Mansel-, George Pleydell, Morton Grove, Arthur Edmund, Eliza Sophia, Caroline Sophia, Louisa Mary and Emma Georgina.
