His paternal grandparents were Edward Kemeys Esquire and Joan Lewis; his maternal grandparents were William Jones Esquire and Jane Gwillim. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Nicholas, Charles, Edmund, Joan (Jane), Letitia, Anne and Catherine. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named George and Mary.
