Martha Jane was born on April 10th, 1853 in Shelby Co.,KY. Martha Jane's father was William I. Hughes and her mother was Mahala Rodgers. Her maternal grandparents were George W. Rodgers and Elizabeth Pierson. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John Samuel, Joseph Clarence, William Thomas, Benjamin Franklin, Sarah Elizabeth, Infant, Mahala Ann, Lucilla Lou, Amanda and Mildred. She was the fourth youngest of the eleven children. She died at 9 months old on January 27th, 1854 in Shelby Co.,KY.-
