Notes for ANDREW FINLEY:
According to the rental books of Cupar Angus Abbey, leased a one-fourth
portion of Aughinlyth, at Pentecoast, for five years, and figures in
different rentals up to 1546. In 1507, he appears as Bailiff of Cupar
Angus, and in 1542, as Sheriff. In this capacity, he was associated with
Donald Campbell and David Campbell, the grandsons of the Earl of Argyll.
There is an Aberdeen Charter of Sale, 1491, by Andrew Finley, of
Aughinlyth, toJohn Stewart of Fothergill, of the lands of Achnamarkmore,
and this was followed by a notarial instrument taken by John Finley, son
and heir of the late Andrew Finley, April 27, 1547, of the rights and
reversions of the lands for twenty pounds, payable in one day between
sunrise and sunset. There is then aprecept of sasine by Andrew Finley in
favor of Neill Stewart, as son and heir of Neill Stewart, given at
Glentilt, June 4, 1545, in presence of John, sonand heir of Andrew
Finley, and on August 13, 1501, a Charter of Sale to Eleanore, Countess
of Atholl. John Sstewart, Earl of Atholl's seal, and the seal of Andrew
Finley, are appended, at Dunkeld, May 31, 1502. Andrew Finley died at
Aughinlyth, Cupar Angus, prior to 1547. Andrew Finley married Janet Hay,
a daughter of John Hay, of Erroll, Perthshire, a descendant of David De
Haya, Sheriff of Forfashire, 1214 A. D., and also of William de la Haya,
Cup Bearer to Malcolm IV, as he styled himself in a Charter in 1172, when
he receivedthe lands of Erroll in Perthshire. John Hay of Erroll was a
great-grandson of Sir Gilbert Hay, a steadfast adheret of Robert Bruce.
The Parish Register of Cupar Angus Abbey records the baptisms of their
children.
