Joseph Edward Lee was born on March 9th, 1871 in Chatham Co, N. C.. Joseph Edward Lee's father was Atlas Perry and his mother was Sarah "Sallie" Murray. His paternal grandparents were James Perry and Elizabeth Meehler Roberts. He had seven sisters named Nancy Virginia, Bettie Ann, Mary Emaline, Sarah Arabel, Rosetta Vashti, Angelia Josephine and Lora Axie Elvira. He was the second youngest of the eight children.-
