Sarah "Sallie" was born about 1799 in Montgomery, Virginia. Sarah "Sallie"'s father was Thomas Wesley Jewell and her mother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Graham. Her paternal grandparents were William Jewell and Martha Unknown; her maternal grandparents were James Graham and Sarah Farley.
