His paternal grandparents were Emperor Louis I (The debonaire) Hre and Ermengardeof Hasbaigne; his maternal grandparents were Ct. Hugues III of Tours and Ava of Upper Alsace. He had a brother and a sister, named The Saxon and Ermengardeof Lorraine. He was the youngest of the three children.
