His paternal grandparents were Sir John de Burgh and Hawise de Lanvallei; his maternal grandparents were John De Baliol LORD OF BARNARD CASTLE and Dervorgilla De Galloway. He had four sisters named Devorguille De, Hawise, Margaret de and Christiana Devorguille de. He was the second youngest of the five children.
