Alan was born about 1155 in Wycombe,Buckinghamshire,England. Alan's father was Thomas Basset , of Headington and his mother was Adeliza (Alice) de Dunstanville. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Basset , of Wallingford and Edith D'Oilly; his maternal grandparents were Alan de Dunstanville and Emma De Langetot. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas III, Gilbert, Gilbert, Isabella and N.N.. He was the third oldest of the six children.
