Archibald was born about 1454 in Kilmarnock,Renfrew,Scotland. Archibald's father was Robert , 1st Lord Boyd Boyd and his mother was Mariota , Lady Boyd Maxwell. His paternal grandparents were Sir Thomas , 5th Baron of Kilmarnock Boyd and Isabell; his maternal grandfather was Sir Robert , Lord Calderwood Maxwell. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, John, Elizabeth , Countess of Angus, Annabella and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
