William Tucker of Sampson County, N.C., was the father of Hiram and Ira
Tucker. Their mother is unknown and there are probably other unknown
siblings. Hiram married Catherine Hendry, daughter of Alexander and
Thankful Cromartie Hendry of Bladen Co., N.C., about 1805. They were
living in New Hanover Co., NC when the 1820 Census Records were taken.
Ira Tucker married Priscilla Carroll, daughter of Jesse and Mary Gavin
Carroll, in NC before 1817. Hiram Tucker and his family, with his
brother, Ira, and his family moved to Pike Co. AL about 1821.
Hiram and Catherine had a daughter, Mary Catherine, born in Pike Co., AL
in 1822, earlier children were born in N.C. and later children were born
in Pike Co., AL. Hiram Tucker and family are found in the 1830 Pike Co AL
Census Records. They were farmers who settled in the Grady-Helicon area
where Pike County met Lowndes and Montgomery Counties. Descendants still
live in the area. Hiram was a very successful farmer and a good provider
for his wife and 15 children as is proved by his estate papers. When the
two Tucker brothers left North Carolina
with their families they were members of the Presbyterian Church but they
soon became members of the Church of Christ and later Ira J. (son of
Hiram) and Priscilla A. Dendy Tucker gave land for a cemetery and church
was was also to be used as a place of learning. The cemetery was already
in existence at the time of the deed. The Tucker children and other
children in the community attended school there at Fairview Church of
Christ. There
are benches still in the church that were used by these children. The
Tuckers owned land from Tucker's Cross Roads (Grady) to LaPine. Hiram and
Catherine Hendry Tucker's burial place is not known but is thought to be
under the old cedar trees where the graves have no markers but have high
piles of stone to mark the graves. The descendants of Hiram and Ira
Tucker and their neighbors meet at the Fairview Church every year on
Mother's Day for a memorial service with a picnic lunch following the
services.
