My Granddaddy had a large tool shed in the back of his and my
Grandmother's home. The shed contained his many tools, which he used in
his profession as a carpenter. There were also varied, sorted items such
as nails, screws, strings, wires, etc. in the shed. My brother Bruce and
I enjoyed exploring inside of Granddaddy's shed. After permission he
would let us use his tools so that we could hammer, saw, chop, and
sometimes build something. During one of my tool-shed explorations in
the summer of 1961 when I was twelve, I found a few coins in a nail
holding slot. The coins were strange to me at the time. One was a 1901
"V" Nickel, and the others being a Shield Nickel with no date, an 1899
Barber dime, and a 1900 New Orleans mint Barber quarter. I ran outside to
the front of the house where he was sitting in an aluminum folding lounge
chair. Several tall oak trees shaded him. In his left hand he clutched
his sweat-fly, mayfly, housefly, killing weapon, better known as
flyswatter, which he had resting on his left knee. The other hand
brought an unfiltered cigarette to his lips. As I stood in front of him,
my hand opened and revealed the coins. "May I keep them," I
breathlessly asked. With a gentle nod he responded yes. I grinned and
clasped the coins in a tight squeeze. "Thanks, Granddaddy!" Granddaddy
Les Sullivan, a thanks that continues today, because that gift began my
coin collecting which continues today. Written by his Grandson, Ron
Bridges on 13 May 2000.
