Herman was born in 1817 in ?.¹ Herman's father was John Steele and his mother was Ruth McEwen. His maternal grandparents were Thomas McEwen and Elizabeth Cochran. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Betsy, Eleanor and Ruth Elmira. He was the youngest of the six children. He died in ?.¹
