Note:
From C. L. Boyd:
Along toward the end of the Civil War, Bushwhackers raided John
Standridge's place and killed him, along with tow of his sons, Lemuel and
Wash. According to information included in John Jrs pension file, this
event occured in late January or early Feb. 1865. Alonzo Standridge siad
that the reason they were killed was because John had five or six hundred
dollars hid and woul dnot tell where it was hidden. Alonzo also said it
happened about daybreak. John and the two boys ran out to see what was
disturbing the chickens. Nancy told that her mother (Betsey) picked up
Wash and carried him back into the house after he was shot through the
neck. All three Standridge men are buried in Richland Cemetery in the
same grave on a feather bed. The women dug the grave and carried the
feather bed from the house to lay them on. This grave is on the left
inside the gate of the cemetery and is now marked by a stone put up by
Dallas Standridge. The twins, Bessie and Dessie, show DAllas where the
grave was located.
