His family consisted of himself, listed as "Richard" Lewis (26), Martha
(29, AL), Malachi (4, AL), Frances (2, AL), Thomas Jordan (14, AL), Mary
Jordan (12, AL), Georgia Jordan (10, AL).
Eldred and Ira may have been brothers. Their ages are too close to be
father and son. I thought Senator Lewis may have been related and still
think so. How is the question. Ira died about 1888. He fathered 7-8
children One was my gggrandmother. In 1860 he was in Butler County as
Captain-elect of what may have been a home guard. He was listed in
Lowndes County Census in 1860. Crenshaw County Census in 1870. He had a
son named Dixon H. born about 1848. Dixon was killed when he was found in
bed with the killers wife. I am in contact with a descendant of his.
Other than that I have no knowledge of who Ira is. Sorry. Chuck

"Another horrible and cold-blooded murder was committed in this county at
Cawthon's stream mill, on September 26th, by one sumling, on the person
of D. H. Lewis. They were brothers-in-law and at work together, when
Sumling struck Lewis on the posterior portion of the cranium with a
handspike. One blow was sufficient to fell the victim to the ground and
prove fatal in five or six hours. When he struck the fatal blow he
exclaimed to Lewis, 'You called my lettle grl a liar.' (Holl
Springs South)".
