James Ebear Grimes, the well known farmer and surveyor of Weogufka, was
born at Newsite, Tallapoosa County. He is a son of Thomas Martin and
Mahala S. Goss Grimes, a grandson of John Palmer and Lenda Rowe Grimes
and a great-grandson of Thomas Miner and Anna Powers Grimes. Thomas Miner
Grimes lived and died in Madison County, GA. Anna Powers, his wife,
daughter of William Powers, lived to be very old. John Palmer Grimes, the
only son of Thomas M. and Anna Powers Grimes was born in Madison County
as well but came to Tallapoosa County and served in the Indian War of
1836.
Thomas Martin Grimes, the eldest son of John P. and Lenda Rowe Grimes
was nine years old when his parents moved to Alabama. After his stint in
the Confederate Army he was married to Mahala S. Goss, daughter of
Charles and Mahala S. Smith Goss.
James E. Grimes moved to Coosa County with his father where he
received his early education and later attended the Lee Academy at
Goodwater then Sylacauga Academy. Still later he took a complete course
at Bowling Green, KY. After teaching for two years he turned his
attention toward farming and surveying. For seven years he held the
office of county surveyor for Coosa County with distinction. Continuing
to farm, he is regarded as one of the most progressive farmers in his
section of the state. He married Matta Miller, daughter of Charles T. and
Elizabeth Mitchell Miller of Bentleyville, her parents and grandparents
came from Georgia. They were the parents of James Sylvester, Charles
Martin, Jessie Judson, Cora and Clara. Clara died and Mr. Grimes married
Judith B., daughter of Benjamin and Anna Gamal McLendon. All of the
Grimes families are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. Source:
