Walter was born about 0965 in Longueville, Normandy, France.  Walter's father was Osbern Geoffrey De Bolbec and his mother was Avelina De Crepon De Arques.  His maternal grandparents were King of Denmark Herbastus Gorrmsson Harald , King of Denmark/Harald and Gunhild Olafsdatter. He had a brother and two sisters, named Osbern Gyffarde, Josceline and Beatrice.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Humphrey, Hebrand, Gilbert, Richard, Ilbert, Touroude De Pont and Josceline.
