Ermengarde of was born about 1020 in Turin, Italy.  Ermengarde of's father was Ulric Manfredo II Count of Susa Marquis of Turin and her mother was Berthe of Este.  Her paternal grandparents were Manfred I Count of Susa & Turin and Prangorda Di Reggio; her maternal grandparents were Oberto II Count of Genoa & Tortone & Este and Railende of Como. She had four sisters named Adelaide of, Beatrice of, Bertha of and Imilia of.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
