His paternal grandparents were John IV le Strange , Lord of Knockyn and Joan de Somery; his maternal grandparents were John de Walton , of Wellesbourne & Walton, Sir and Isabel Shirley. He had a sister named Elizabeth le. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother named John VI 2nd Baron le. Ebles Lestrange, 1st Lord (Baron) Strange, so created 3 Dec 1326 by writ of summons, although also occasionally referred to in contemporary documents as Earl of Lincoln, presumably in right of his wife (husband and wife were the subject of an order decreeing that they should be paid the stipend from Lincs revenues traditionally associated with the upkeep of the earldom of a county; moreover, he, his wife and their heirs were appointed Keepers of Lincoln Castle 1331 and he was made Keeper of Lincs 1332; he was, however, never summoned to Parliament as Earl of Lincoln); supported Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster (eldest son of Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster, 2nd son of Henry III) in opposing and encompassing the death of Piers Gaveston, Edward II's favourite; pardoned for this 1313; Knight Banneret 1326; called up for military service against Scots 1327 and 1332/3; married by 10 Nov 1324, as her 2nd husband, Lady Alice de Lacy, Countess of Lincoln and Salisbury in her own right (born 25 Dec 1281; married 1st c1294 Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster (he seems to have been called Earl of Lincoln also, again presumably in right of his wife; divorced 1318 following Lady Alice's abduction 1317 by a knight, who also claimed the Earldom of Lincoln, together with that of Salisbury, in right of an alleged inimacy with her before her 1st marriage such that he was actually her husband, this being allegedly with the knowledge of Edward II so as to heap abloquy on the Earl of Lancaster); married 3rd Hugh de Fre(y)ne, Lord (Baron) Frene, following a second abduction, and dsp 2 Oct 1348, when the Earldom of Lincoln of the 1232 creation expired), daughter of 3rd Earl of Lincoln of the 1232 creation by his wife Margaret, heiressof her grandmother Ela Countess of Salibury, and dsp 8 Sep 1335, when the Barony expired.
