Walter "Ballioch" was born about 1218 in Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland. Walter "Ballioch"'s father was Walter Stewart , 3rd High Steward of Scotland and his mother was Beatrix de Angus. His paternal grandparents were Alan FitzWalter , 2nd High Steward of Scotland and Margaret de Galloway; his maternal grandparents were Gilchrist 4th Earl of Angus and Margaret Haraldsdottir. He had a brother and four sisters, named Alexander, Elizabeth (Beatrix), Eupheme, Margaret and Miss. He was the youngest of the six children. He died before April 28th, 1296 in Inchmoh Island, Loch Rusky, Stirling, Scotland.General Notes
Walter Stewart, Earl of Menteith, so invested in right of his wife c 1260; called Ballach or Bailloch ("Freckled"); allegedly also accompanied St Louis 1248; Sheriff of Ayrshire 1264 and Dunbartonshire 1289; married Mary, Countess of Menteith in her own right, younger daughter and coheir of Maurice, 3rd Earl of Menteith, and died by 28 April 1296.
