JOHN SPILMAN, the son of Thomas Spilman and Elizabeth Harward, appea rs to
have been associated in business in Thaxted for a time with his brother ,
William, and their kinsman, Robert Spilman.
By 1492 he had removed from Th axted, possibly on account of the decline
of its industries as described abov e, and settled in Great Baddow, County
Essex, near Chelmsford.
John Spilman died at Great Baddow in May, 1540, as shown by the following
entry in the par ish register: "Burials, 1540. Maye, John Spylman was
beryed the 30 Daye." Nea r this record appear the following: "1546.
August. Julyan Spilman was buried the 25 Daye." "1548. November. Alse
Spylman & Mother Wattes were buried ye 10 day." "1551. October. Joan
Spyllman the 13 daye."
