Sir Henry de Soothill, of Soothill, co. Yorks. & c., younger son and heir to his brother William. As noted above, he granted dower in 1309/10 to Joan, widow of William,
'of the manor of Sothill' etc, with all William's lands etc in Morlay, Batelay, Heckmundwick', Erdeslawe and Chiddeshill' (Soothill, Yk Morley, Yk Batley, Yk Heckmondwike, Yk Ardsley, Yk Chidsall, Yk) as dower Henry to have two thirds and Joan one third of the profits from thinning the woods'
Sir Henry entered into an agreement in 1324/5 with Sir Richard de Moseley for the marriage of his younger son John to Helen/Elaine de Moseley, and made several Grants (as well as being the grantee of others) in the same year concerning lands in Rawtonstall, Ovenden and elsewhere. He obtained lands in Stansfield, co. Yorks. by a grant in 1343, which evidently were a gift or inheritance of his younger son John (see below).
He entered into a series of transactions in 25 Edw. III (1351/2) evidently intended to provide for effective employment of his landed resources, and to ensure the continuity tenure of his lands and rights by his heir, the younger Sir Henry. A direct grant of lands to his son Henry was made in or about 1349, and a further grant of the manor of Soothill to chaplains evidences his intent to have the caput of his holdings pass following his death to his heir.
He probably died ca. 1352, as his son Sir Henry was seeking seisin of his lands around that time (see below). [John Ravilious, SGM, 6 Nov 2002]
