John was born about 1750 in New Jersey. John's father was Johannes Shurts (Shurtz) and his mother was Margriete Van Buskirk. His paternal grandparents were Michael Shurts (Shurtz) and Maria Elizabetha Stiernen (Steir); his maternal grandparents were Thomas Van Buskirk and Folkje Or Volkertje Colyer (Collier). He had a brother and a sister, named Michael and Rahel (Rachel). He was the second oldest of the three children. He died in September 1813 in Readington Township Hunterdon Co. New Jersey.-
