Elias was born in 1148 in Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire, England.  Elias' father was Godfrey de Scudamore and his mother was Matilda Giffard.  His paternal grandfather was Walter de Scudamore , Sir; his maternal grandparents were Elias II Giffard , Lord of Brimsfield and Bertha de Clifford. He had a sister named Petronilla.  He was the younger of the two children.
