Matilda was born in 1127 in Brimfield, Gloucestershire, England. Matilda's father was Elias II Giffard , Lord of Brimsfield and her mother was Bertha de Clifford. She had a brother named Elias III. She was the older of the two children.
They had a son and a daughter, named Elias and Petronilla.
